Aural plaques horses2/28/2023 ![]() But if I stay calm while he's trying to mentally handle something scary, he will eventually come down to my level. If I ask him to be completely calm before addressing something he is uncomfortable with, it might not ever happen. There are other things he would avoid, and with his personality, he does better when I make him confront the situation and learn to relax within it. ![]() I don't know if I should address his brain first by blocking the avoidance or if I should keep going with the progressive approach and retreat. I've heard a few different philosophies, but I am having a hard time finding resources and would like to know what you think! I've been struggling with this for months now and his anxiety and avoidance when he knows it's a bridle or halter is much worse than just my hands. ![]() He's learned the word "Down" means head down and releases great to pressure.again with just one hand up over his head. I do it with one hand, fine.two hands, head up. Here is where I get stuck: when I lift up both arms to prepare him for dealing with a rope going over his ears, he won't put his head down and continuously flips his head around. When I put his bridle on, I unbuckle the cheek piece and put it on similar to a rope halter because I don't want to make the situation worse. He has learned that one hand at a time won't cause him pain. Using the slow, more natural horsemanship (approach and retreat stuff), I can now touch his ears anywhere, move them, pretty much doing anything. There are only some experimental treatments available, which I am considering, but that's not what I need help with.īecause of this, he has learned to be ear shy (long before I owned him). It's my understanding that his ears don't hurt when they are just left alone or handled gently. It's not a fungus, it's a virus like warts. ![]() My Arab, Thunder, has aural plaques in his ears that cause him pain when they are handled too much or pinched together. ![]()
